The Association
Founded in 1937, the Contra Costa Taxpayers Association is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization composed of taxpayers residing or doing business in Contra Costa County. It is exclusively funded by the dues and donation of its members. Over 350 community leaders, business managers and concerned citizens belong and support the Association because they believe in its mission and they endorse its goal of promoting efficiency and economy in local government. Both residential and several types of business memberships are available to Contra Costa taxpayers.
The Association is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the members. The Board elects officers annually and employs a salaried Executive Director to serve as spokesperson. Offices are maintained at 838 Escobar Street, Martinez, adjacent to the Contra Costa County government offices.
The Challenge
More than ever before, taxpayers in Contra Costa County are increasingly threatened by unprecedented growth in taxes, fees and benefit assessments imposed by the ever expanding, complex, and remote layers of county, city, and special district government.
Businesses endure ever more intrusive government regulation and struggle with its cumbersome bureaucracy. Residents find public services unsatisfactory, public facilities inadequate and public officials unresponsive.
Fiscal issues dominate policy debates as local governments, struggling to cope with unfounded federal and state mandates and service shifts, constantly schemes to boost their revenues without having to ask the voters.
The Contra Costa Taxpayers Association has taken a leadership role fiscal oversight of local government and aggressively resists unwarranted taxes, excessive assessments, discriminatory regulations, and ill-advised public expenditures.
Our Association brings the taxpayer’s perspective to public policy debates. We serve as a constant reminder to local officials who they work for and who pays their bills. We promote balance between the public and private sectors and encourage fiscal prudence with objective analysis, balanced alternatives and constructive recommendations.
